AboutLaws in Minnesota seem to lean toward protecting mothers while they abuse drugs and harm their unborn child.Minnesota has Laws in place to charge the Mother with child abuse,But from my personal experienceIt does not seem to get done.To civilly commit a Mother is a policy in Minnesota But there againI have tried to see why that is failed to get done also,You can place a Mother on hold if she test positive for narcotics while she is pregnant,But there again I have fought to wonder why theselaws and policies are not enforced. In Minnesota Health Care professionals are required to report this kind of drug abuse to the welfare system ,if the Mother And child test positive.After The Welfare system is involved they take the child into protective custody and can terminate your parental rights ,But although I have seen the welfare system work,they have never attempted to commit or charge the Mother with child abuse,or even child endangerment.The Laws Should be Harsher and they should be enforced.I know the state is afraid the mother will not get the prenatal care she or the baby needs If she is afraid she will be charged with a crime.But on the other hand these Mothers hardly seek the prenatal care they need any way and if they do, what is the point when they can walk out of the clinic freely to use drugs and there are no real consequences.And this can go on and on In the State Of Minnesota,The Mother can walk away from the poor little baby that she had who is suffering from withdrawl symptoms because of the effects of being on drugs for 9 months.Left to care for these Babies are the Grandparents, Fathers or any one the Welfare system chooses.The child Is Called Special needs Then.The cant walk or talk or play like other children their own age,and alot of the time they spend in the Doctors Office now.And guess what Mom is pregnant again and will harm one more child.When will this change? The Harsh Reality is : There has to be Harsher Laws :Step It UP Minnesota; South Carolina,Wisconsin and South Dakota Have laws and they work,it says come to South Carolina pregnant and do drugs you will be arrested Minnesota should join them on the right path of protecting these unborn babieswho will be born with a life time of problems to look forward to, and the cost of Health Care is Astronomical ,That is if the Baby even lives at all.

A new documentary by Michael Webber has been getting a lot of attention at film festivals this year. The Elephant in the Living Room brings the issue of privately owned lions and tigers and bears (and reptiles and other wild animals) to the big screen.
In an interview with CityBeat, Webber said exotic pet ownership may be shocking, but it’s not an obscure phenomenon. “I started paying attention and that’s when I realized this was the elephant in the living room. This big, enormous thing that’s going on in our country and no one is really recognizing it.”

It’s no coincidence that the Dayton, Ohio, filmmaker aimed the camera at his own state. Ohio has some of the weakest exotic animal laws in the country, a flaw which gained national attention this summer when a bear killed his caretaker. Despite obvious and repeated negligence on the part of the bear’s owner, Sam Mazzola, authorities’ hands were tied because you can pretty much own whatever you want in Ohio. And Mazzola isn’t the only one whose choice of pets has caused problems.
Imagine you are down on your luck, and you have a pet. It’s a heartbreaking situation: You barely have enough money to feed yourself, much less your companion animal. Do you go without food? Do you give up your beloved pet?
In an effort to help countless people who are now finding themselves in just this sort of situation, a no-kill shelter in Idaho, the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, has partnered with The Hunger Coalition to help feed the pets of those in need. The program, Paws for Hunger, provides pet food for those who might otherwise have a hard time affording it.
“These are pets that already have loving homes,” said the animal shelter’s director, Dr. Jo-Anne Dixon. “When a family needs help from the food bank, it’s usually a temporary and very stressful situation. Pets are very much a part of the family support system, particularly for the children. We want to make sure that this part of the support system isn’t broken.” About 30 families receive pet food each month, with about 10 also receiving food for themselves. More than 4,000 pounds of pet food were distributed by the animal shelter in 2009. In 2010, that number has nearly doubled.
Stephenville has banned text messaging and use of handheld cell phones while driving. The City Council considered a plan to ban all cell phone use by motorists, but rejected it during the April 6 voting. Fines will be up to $200.
El Paso prohibits texting and talking on a cell phone while driving in city limits. The City Council approved the ban on March 9 and it went into effect May 1. Hands-free cell phones OK. Fines up to $500. El Paso already outlawed use of handheld cell phones in school zones.
Galveston has banned text messaging while driving within city limits. Fines up to $500. The City Council voted to outlaw texting for motorists on Jan. 14 and the ban went into effect immediately.

Statistics show that driving while distracted has a higher percentage of fatalities compared to drunken drivers. A Virginia Tech study illustrates the distance required to stop while driving 35 mph and texting on a phone compared to a drunk driver stopping. A drunk driver travels an average of four feet more before stopping and the texting driver travels 25 more feet before stopping. The study also goes on to show that drunk driving increases the likelihood of causing a car crash by four times. A texting driver increases the likelihood of causing a crash by eight times.

As we all well know, the population of a given country is to be considered in relation with the available territory, the resources, the state of, interaction with and impact on the environment, the flora and fauna, and this all with regards to the modes of social and economic productions and the standard of life, which are therethrough responsibly achieved or made potentially realizable.
This is as true as the fact, that this planet forms a rather homogeneous eco-system, wherein not only all the elements are interdependent and interconnected, but also one, in which each of these elements is equally important and necessary to the preservation of the whole.
Human societies are not exempt from these natural principles and in the current world view and international practice, whereby the notions of integration and globalization are the motto, it is practically impossible to render proper measure of overpopulation in national or regional terms or to approach it exclusively in such a context. No country is an exception.
Overpopulation is a worldwide issue.
Overpopulation is an all-human tragedy and, as such, it requires a worldwide understanding and solution.
The situation may of course differ from one country to another, but this does not substantially change the global picture, for, also the less overpopulated areas would eventually face it and taste it through immigration and the effects of overpopulation on the overall state of the climate, the environment, the resources and the globalized economy as well as on world peace and stability.
Besides, without tackling overpopulation, all measures, which would be taken to ensure the growth of the economy and provide a given population of a given country with a higher quality of life, would only be postponing, shoving the problem onto future generations?? -? as if “killing our grandchildren to feed our children.”, to quote one wise man.
Overpopulation and its consequences on our evolution and our security as well as on the sustainability of this planet?are definitely a source of great concern: there are just too many of us? -? think of the amount of garbage alone, which seven billion Humans produce! Daily.
It is also obvious, that our planet is subject to far-reaching changes.
The consequences of these changes could be catastrophic, if we do not re-adjust our ways of thinking and doing, also with regards to reproduction and population.
Our world is extremely overpopulated; our legitimate demands of food, energy, water and other goods of first necessity weigh heavily on the available resources, the environment, the flora and fauna. This is no longer sustainable.

A worldwide, rational, responsible, democratic ( applicable and mandatory to each and all! ), scientific and rigorously monitored Birth Control is the only logical, mature and ethical answer to this unprecedented, but largely foreseen challenge.

Some, however, speak of free energy, as the ultimate remedy to this crisis.
Truly, technology alone is not a panacea in human matters.
Lasting food security, development in sustainability thus, could hardly be realized without absorbing into the equation the determining factor of human population and its diverse legitimate demands, both of which will be growing exponentially.

Others may still say, “multiply yourself” orders The Bible.
Genesis 1:22: “God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”.”
Well, we certainly shall argue here, that reason is also given to us, so that we can know, judge and decide when we ‘have multiplied enough’.
And again, the Commandment could have as well been: “multiply yourself with wisdom and reason and humaneness and knowledge and care and management.”
Besides, if we keep procreating the way we now do, there wouldn’t be much animals, fish, trees, “birds” left “on the earth”!
Overpopulation has indeed a deeper spiritual dimension and, besides,? the following summary makes convincingly the case for a serious struggle against overpopulation, even if one is to consider?the issue?from a solely practical point of view:
Fewer Humans = smaller petroleum demand = less carbon dioxide/monoxide produced by cars and industry
Fewer Humans = reduced food demand = fewer trees cut down for farmland (e.g. Brazilian rainforest)
Fewer Humans = reduced demand for everything which results in a reduced price/cost for everything (education, well-being, housing, energy, food…)

We are already causing drastic climate change; species are going extinct and fellow Humans are starving to death en masse which means that the population is obviously already too high.

Yesterday saw the launch of Kindergarten to College, America’s first publicly-funded college savings program. Over the next three years, about 1,200 San Francisco kindergartners will get new trust accounts from Citibank with an initial $50 deposit of city funds. Students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch will get $100.
Going forward, organizers hope that non-profits and corporations will provide matching donations for money the families manage to save. For the first year, the great local non-profit EARN will match the first $100 that all families save this year; it will match $100 savings from low-income families only in future years. The San Francisco Foundation will make additional matches if parents go to financial education classes and make routine deposits.
The idea is that students who already have a college fund will be more likely to matriculate — seven times more likely, according to one study. City officials urge families to commit to depositing even $5 a month.
Many of the children who receive the accounts will be the first in their family to have one, since half of San Francisco’s black and Hispanic population lack a savings account.
Mayor Gavin Newsom presented a similar idea, the Baby Savings Bond, in his inaugural address in 2008. He says he cribbed it from then-Sen. Hillary Clinton. “No one else in the country is doing this,” he says. “We are not just saying every child can go to college. We are now providing families with the financial tools necessary to make this a reality.”
It may seem like a topic only a toddler could love: a battle over the cost and contents of infant formula. But a recent bill involving the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants, Children (WIC) exemplifies the food industry’s aggressive lobbying and marketing tactics, which could leave the government footing an unnecessary $100 million bill, while ensuring many low-income families stay hungry.
At case here is a provision in the pending reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, which expires September 30th. WIC, which provides formula and healthy food vouchers to low-income mothers with small children, is part of the Act. As reported on The Hill, the Senate passed a version of the Act in August, but it didn’t include a very important measure: establishing a science-based process for assesing whether WIC should offer foods that contain functional ingredients.
You’ve no doubt seen the names of these functional ingredients splashed across the front of food packages: probiotics, DHA, lycopene, omega-3s and other intriguing-sounding additives. Included in yogurt, eggs, cereals, and other products, they are also becoming ubiquitous in infant formula. But their addition isn’t necessarily a good thing. Not only does the formula with additives cost more, they are also touted as providing nutritional or other health benefits, without much science to support their claims. Enfamil’s proprietary ingredient LIPIL, for instance, contains DHA and ARA designed to “support baby’s brain and eye development.” Their Dual Prebiotics suggest it will “support babies’ own defenses.”
For WIC, increased expenditure on additive-laden foods means fewer women are able to enroll in the program — the more money it spends on food, the fewer number of enrollees. According to the Economic Research Service, part of the USDA, functional ingredients in infant formula cost WIC up to $90 million a year. Yet there is no scientific consensus showing that the added ingredients impart any health benefits.
Burmese police announced this week that out of the hundreds of human traffickers they have arrested over the past several years, at least 100 of them were once victims. Sadly, trafficking victims becoming traffickers is not unusual. But what makes a person go from victim to trafficker?
Most of the 100 victims-turned-traffickers were trafficked from Burma into China and Thailand for forced labor, forced prostitution, or forced marriage. Once discovered, they were shipped back to Burma, sometimes deported, and usually with no compensation. Back in Burma, there were no support services for them, no money for counseling or job training, no help with medical bills or education. The lack of support for victims traps them in a vicious cycle. Some people end up trafficked again and again because they cannot break out of that cycle. Others eventually break the cycle, by becoming traffickers themselves.
Victims can turn into traffickers for a number of reasons. For those trafficked as children, there may be no other conceivable industry for them to enter other than the one they were sold into as a child, whether that’s commercial sex, brick making, or domestic service. So as an adult, they follow the only career path they’ve known and recruit other children into the same industry. Others many find that the only model of power in their life is the person who owns and controls them — their trafficker. When they look around for ways to empower themselves, becoming a subjugater of others is all they see. Still others, as is the case with many of the 100 Burmese nationals, may not even realize what they’re engaging in is against the law. They know the trafficking routes, brokers, and bosses from the time they were forced to work. That they should recruit others to do the same thing might feel like the natural extension of their previous “job.”
