Last week, the World Bank caught the ire of scores of LGBT activists, after the Bank decided to include an ex-gay therapy organization as part of its Community Connections Campaign. The group in question, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX), was listed as one of a host of charities that World Bank employees could donate money toward, with the World Bank then matching employee donations with a 50-100 percent simultaneous contribution.

Why did this trouble LGBT activists? The reasons are many. First could be that PFOX believes that homosexuality and same-sex attraction can be cured, and have endorsed controversial “ex-gay” therapy programs that have been discredited and debunked by every major medical and psychological organization. It could also be that the guru of PFOX’s therapy program is an ex-gay honcho with ties to Uganda’s horrific “Kill the Gays” legislation, that would criminalize homosexuality with the death penalty or life imprisonment. Or it could be that the head of PFOX’s Speakers Bureau is a convicted felon who bilked poor communities out of lumps of money in a bond scheme.

With a reputation like that, one has to wonder what the World Bank was thinking when they approved PFOX as a qualified charity under its Community Connections Campaign. Moreover, as Truth Wins Out noted, it looked as if the World Bank bent the rules to allow PFOX to obtain charity status, since their Community Action Program is supposed to honor charities that have an active presence in Washington, D.C. PFOX most certainly does not, and their headquarters are more than 120 miles away.

Well, some good news. It looks as if the World Bank is thinking twice about their decision to add PFOX to the Community Connections Campaign. Earlier today, the World Bank issued a statement saying that they will not be giving any matching funds to PFOX, or any charities that are new with the Bank this year, effective today.

Imagine you are down on your luck, and you have a pet. It’s a heartbreaking situation: You barely have enough money to feed yourself, much less your companion animal. Do you go without food? Do you give up your beloved pet?

In an effort to help countless people who are now finding themselves in just this sort of situation, a no-kill shelter in Idaho, the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, has partnered with The Hunger Coalition to help feed the pets of those in need. The program, Paws for Hunger, provides pet food for those who might otherwise have a hard time affording it.

“These are pets that already have loving homes,” said the animal shelter’s director, Dr. Jo-Anne Dixon. “When a family needs help from the food bank, it’s usually a temporary and very stressful situation. Pets are very much a part of the family support system, particularly for the children. We want to make sure that this part of the support system isn’t broken.” About 30 families receive pet food each month, with about 10 also receiving food for themselves. More than 4,000 pounds of pet food were distributed by the animal shelter in 2009. In 2010, that number has nearly doubled.

Movies and TV have created the stereotype of the Wicked Stepmother. Time to end that drama. In the year 2010, more than half of U.S. families will be part of a blended family. The Wicked Stepmother Stereotype needs to end.

Sign the petition to let Media Outlets know you tired of the false stereotype of the Wicked Stepmother. In today’s blended family, stepmom’s are working hard to meet the needs of their children and bring together a large family atmosphere, instead of a war-zone.

Sign the petition for your friends, your family, your sisters. Sign it for your children. Stepmothers, sign the petition for yourself.
Put End to Media’s Wicked Stepmother Stereotype

I wanted to cover my bases, know what was up at all times. So I started following real-time search results on Twitter for the word “homeless.” How naive I was.

The filth and vile that that column brings me everyday, when it doesn’t defeat me, cuts my work out for me. It’s unbelievable how callous we are as a society when our ills are shown so continuously in our faces. We steel ourselves — out of necessity — just to get through the day. It kills our compassion, slowly but surely.

I remember once being down and out in Paris, as it were, and having to beg for money. I was in Paris backpacking, trying to “find myself,” or something. My being broke was the result of bad planning and the beer halls of Germany. I needed to get money for food and an internet connection to find out where my friends were and maybe get some money wired from my parents.

So there I sat, on top of my backpack, outside the entrance to the Gare de Norde train station on the north side of Paris, hat in my hand, upturned and offered empty to passersby. And that was honestly one of the most humiliating, uncomfortable experiences of my adult life. For 30 minutes I held the hat timidly and refused to look up at anyone who might give me change. After a while I began to glance up, with a look somewhere between puppy-dog and feigned-dignity. After some time, head again bowed in humility, some man of the cloth breezed by quickly and dropped a ten or twenty, some ungodly amount at the time, into my hat.

And so it is with this anecdote that I would like to publicly call out a tweet I just read:

When did homeless ppl get so lazy? I just had a homeless man ask for a dollar, no eye contact or nothin… i mean make me believe u want it

Have you ever heard of the Battle of Blair Mountain? Neither had I, despite its being the largest armed conflict on American soil since the Civil War and the largest labor confrontation ever.

Well the Appalachian coal industry wants to keep it that way, as the Los Angeles Times reports. In fact, not only does the coal industry not want you to know about this particularly dark piece of its history, it wants to rub salt into the wound by blasting away the historic battlegrounds to…wait for it… mine for more coal.

And, lately, it has the help of the National Park Service in accomplishing this task.

To start at the beginning, the Battle of Blair Mountain took place in 1921 in Logan County, West Virginia. Over the course of one week, more than 10,000 coal miners confronted an industry-backed army in their struggle to unionize and demand better treatment. It was a watershed moment in the history of the labor movement. The battle ended after some 1 million rounds were fired and the U.S. Army stepped in (check out some historic photos here.)

Ever since, state authorities have resisted highlighting the battle in history books and have denied commemoration attempts. For one, the episode doesn’t exactly shine a positive light on what West Virginia last year declared to be its state rock. It’s also pretty clear, based on today’s expose from Think Progress, that the coal industry has a firm interest in indoctrinating the state’s youth through the school curriculum.

CNN Reports: Unemployed Need Not Apply http://bit.ly/aOu1UO

After reading the article above, you must find yourself sickened by this heinous and atrocious practice as many individuals have! Do you find this as reprehensible as we do?? The article uncovers a nasty little secret frequently being practiced during one of the most financially difficult times in modern history.? Respected companies many of us have supported or known of virtually all our lives including Sony Ericsson actively choose not to consider hiring from the vast pool of qualified unemployed candidates.? The Vice President of Adecco Group, the largest staffing firm in the world, admitted this requirement was brought up in 3 out of 4 of the last conversations he had regarding openings.? These may be companies you, your friends or family members may be applying to for jobs right now.

Do not believe this regards only high-level positions.? Latro Consulting was revealed doing the same thing when posting listings for grocery store managers throughout the Southeast.? So even if you have to take a lower-level job to support your family, keep a roof over your head and food on your table, you may also be discriminated against simply because you do not have a job.

We demand that the government we support with our taxes address this head-on.? All discrimination is ugly and this is no exception.? For those of you currently working, you, too, are carrying the weight of this burden.? For those families that are now struggling with the loss of an income their expenses have not decreased in proportion.? Some have to (or soon will) take advantage of discounted or free services just to stay afloat which we know comes out of the pockets of taxpayers struggling with their own finances.? We are losing our homes, our medical benefits, 401(k)s, savings accounts and the college funds of our children.? Unemployed members of our communities who are actively seeking work do not want to further burden the country they have been a backbone to for much of their lives.? Those who can and are willing to work must be allowed opportunities based on experience, credentials and willingness, especially now when many are victims of an economy they did not destroy.? We demand we not be further victimized nor discriminated against!? This country and its people simply cannot afford it!

When businesses fail to support America, America fails as a whole.? We ask you not to fail us now.? Please sign this petition which will be submitted to the White House, local politicians and other media outlets demanding laws be put into place or amended that actively and aggressively investigate, prevent and penalize this discrimination.?

All who participate in this petition can be assured of its delivery as all will be provided an electronic copy of the tracking number once it is sent.? At that time, you can send the form letter that will be provided stating your support and participation in this petition to your local government representatives if you so choose to take additional steps.?

Petitions have been used throughout the history of America to impel changes in laws and policies for the better of all.? We are aiming for 500,000 signatures minimum and we expect to exceed that goal.? Please join us!

And go one step further.? If every single person who signs this petition uses whatever forms of social media (s)he is currently using to spread the word it will add even more leverage behind this effort.? Tweet it, post it in your LinkedIn groups, email a friend, send a text message with the link to this petition.? Every effort will be appreciated.

Your contact information will not be used for any other reason going forward.? We want your support and firm alliance in this endeavor and nothing more.?

America cannot work when America cannot work!

It isn’t often that straight people are affected by laws preventing same-sex marriages. But Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer is letting same-sex marriage laws affect his straight marriage. Stringer will marry his fiancé Elyse Buxbaum in Connecticut, instead of New York, as a form of protest against New York’s ban on gay marriages. The couple will obtain their marriage license at a civil ceremony in Connecticut before returning to New York for their religious wedding.

Scott and Elyse are taking their marriage elsewhere as a way of taking personal responsibility and setting an example for others. Stringer explained that “If enough people who have somewhat of a profile — not just politicians, but artists and business leaders — start going into Massachusetts or Connecticut and show New York how embarrassing it is that you can’t get a marriage license for same-sex couples, then we will change things.”

Seven months ago, the New York State Senate killed a bill allowing same-sex marriage in a 38-to-24 vote. Many local politicians have expressed disappointment and anger that the bill didn’t pass but Stringer is the first to publicly boycott the institution in response.
