Hot dogs and chicken patties and greasy pizza — oh my! Those are the entrees most kids currently get in their school cafeterias. If school lunch reform legislation doesn’t pass this week, those meals are unlikely to get any better in the future.

The Child Nutrition Act, legislation that would improve both the quality and accessibility of school lunches, has been kicking around in Congress for months on end. While the Senate passed its version of the school lunch reform bill — the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act — back in August, the House has yet to vote on the bill. That will change this Wednesday, December 1st, as representatives will finally weigh in on the legislation.

The House can do a number of things with the pending legislation. For one, it could neg the bill entirely, meaning kids wouldn’t see any increased funding for school lunches. The House could also delay the bill through a motion to commit, which would essentially kill the legislation for the rest of the year. With Republican lawmakers taking control of the House of Representatives this January, it’s unlikely that increased funding for school lunches will get enough support from Congress next year. Unless the House votes in favor of the Child Nutrition Act this week and sends it to President Obama’s desk for approval, this may be the last chance in the foreseeable future for federal school lunch reform.

You might think that more water would be the last thing a flood victim would want to see, but gaining access to clean drinking water can mean the difference between life and death after a devastating deluge.

Floods not only hold the devastating potential to displace thousands of people from their homes, and kill or injure those in its path, but the surges often cut off large populations of people from food, medical supplies and potable water. Without access to these vital resources, health risks and fatalities can multiply exponentially in a matter of days or even hours.

In many cases these horrible circumstances are compounded by the fact that for those who were homeless before a flood, gaining access to clean water was already an enormous challenge. As Change.org blogger Steven Samra pointed out earlier this year, when massive floods swept through Nashville in May, residents of the city’s largest homeless encampment not only lost all their personal possessions, but also lacked the social safety net available to those who had been previously housed. Unable to access local, state or federal aid, without the assistance of housed friends and family, and dislocated from what limited resources (food, water, etc.) they may have had before the flood, many peoples’ situation went from bad to worse.

Let’s Drive Away From Oil

This fall, President Obama has the opportunity to set fuel efficiency standards that save us money at the pump, decrease carbon pollution, and move us beyond oil.

The technology exists today to build vehicles that save fuel while enhancing safety, performance, and consumer amenities. By relying on American ingenuity and innovation, we can build clean vehicles at a price consumers can afford.

But the auto industry has always been slow to adopt new fuel-saving and safety technology in the absence of strong standards.

Without setting strong new fuel efficiency and global warming pollution standards these fuel-saving and pollution reduction technologies will continue to go under-utilized. Tell President Obama to seize this historic opportunity to make 60 MPG the standard for new vehicles by 2025.
Let’s Drive Away From Oil

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are more than just a mouthful. They are eight poverty-fighting goals — agreed to by more than 180 countries — that fight corruption, create new jobs, empower women and increase smart investments to beat poverty and disease. If these goals are achieved, world poverty will be cut by half, tens of millions of lives will be saved, and billions more people will have the opportunity to benefit from the global economy.

Last year, President Obama stood before the UN and made a powerful pledge to the world that the U.S. will support the MDGs and approach next year’s summit with a global plan to make them a reality.

This lifesaving pledge is due this September and we need more than just talk. Sign this petition to urge President Obama to follow through on his words and take the lead on achieving the MDGs by 2015.
Tell Obama to Keep His Promise to Cut World Poverty in Half!

Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas must be feeling pretty bummed – her proposed $1.5 billion in farm “aid” may be nixed by the White House after all.

Lincoln, chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee who is gearing up for a tough re-election battle this fall, has been fighting for the funds since July when they were removed as a compromise deal from a small business stimulus bill.  The Obama administration had promised to approve the package, which was designed to provide “disaster aid” to farmers who lost crops in 2009, by Aug. 31.

August has come and gone, and there’s no sign of the package. But before we get all sad for the poor farmers down the street whose crops were ruined, let’s examine this plan. America’s biggest, least sustainable farms — many of them in Blanche’s Arkansas — would benefit most from the plan, while smaller, more damaged farms would be left high and dry. Why? The funds would not be distributed based on losses, but on how much they received or should have received under a federal subsidy program based on farm size. As the New York Times explained last week, it’s an “unjustified” windfall, as farms with as little as five percent loss would receive an additional chunk of 90 percent of the subsidy in aid. Bigger, more profitable farms — the ones least damaged by rains — are far more likely to qualify. The Wall Street Journal pointed out that the top 10 percent of wealthiest farmers would receive about two-thirds of the money, and about a quarter of the funds would (curiously) go to Arkansas farms.

CNN Reports: Unemployed Need Not Apply http://bit.ly/aOu1UO

After reading the article above, you must find yourself sickened by this heinous and atrocious practice as many individuals have! Do you find this as reprehensible as we do?? The article uncovers a nasty little secret frequently being practiced during one of the most financially difficult times in modern history.? Respected companies many of us have supported or known of virtually all our lives including Sony Ericsson actively choose not to consider hiring from the vast pool of qualified unemployed candidates.? The Vice President of Adecco Group, the largest staffing firm in the world, admitted this requirement was brought up in 3 out of 4 of the last conversations he had regarding openings.? These may be companies you, your friends or family members may be applying to for jobs right now.

Do not believe this regards only high-level positions.? Latro Consulting was revealed doing the same thing when posting listings for grocery store managers throughout the Southeast.? So even if you have to take a lower-level job to support your family, keep a roof over your head and food on your table, you may also be discriminated against simply because you do not have a job.

We demand that the government we support with our taxes address this head-on.? All discrimination is ugly and this is no exception.? For those of you currently working, you, too, are carrying the weight of this burden.? For those families that are now struggling with the loss of an income their expenses have not decreased in proportion.? Some have to (or soon will) take advantage of discounted or free services just to stay afloat which we know comes out of the pockets of taxpayers struggling with their own finances.? We are losing our homes, our medical benefits, 401(k)s, savings accounts and the college funds of our children.? Unemployed members of our communities who are actively seeking work do not want to further burden the country they have been a backbone to for much of their lives.? Those who can and are willing to work must be allowed opportunities based on experience, credentials and willingness, especially now when many are victims of an economy they did not destroy.? We demand we not be further victimized nor discriminated against!? This country and its people simply cannot afford it!

When businesses fail to support America, America fails as a whole.? We ask you not to fail us now.? Please sign this petition which will be submitted to the White House, local politicians and other media outlets demanding laws be put into place or amended that actively and aggressively investigate, prevent and penalize this discrimination.?

All who participate in this petition can be assured of its delivery as all will be provided an electronic copy of the tracking number once it is sent.? At that time, you can send the form letter that will be provided stating your support and participation in this petition to your local government representatives if you so choose to take additional steps.?

Petitions have been used throughout the history of America to impel changes in laws and policies for the better of all.? We are aiming for 500,000 signatures minimum and we expect to exceed that goal.? Please join us!

And go one step further.? If every single person who signs this petition uses whatever forms of social media (s)he is currently using to spread the word it will add even more leverage behind this effort.? Tweet it, post it in your LinkedIn groups, email a friend, send a text message with the link to this petition.? Every effort will be appreciated.

Your contact information will not be used for any other reason going forward.? We want your support and firm alliance in this endeavor and nothing more.?

America cannot work when America cannot work!

Obama: Keep Your Promises to End Hunger!

Every day, over 25,000 people die from hunger-related causes. This is simply unconscionable. This week, the leaders of G8 and G20 countries will meet in Canada to discuss issues including global hunger and food security.

At last year’s G8 Summit, world leaders pledged decisive action to fight the increase in world hunger that resulted from the sharp rise in food prices and the economic crisis. Now is our chance to ensure that world leaders, specifically President Obama, keep their promises.

Urge President Obama to keep his promises and work closely with Congress to ensure that the world’s vulnerable communities don’t get left behind.

The recent oil spill in the gulf coast could easily become the nation’s worst environmental catastrophe in history, affecting wildlife, land, and fishing industries across the gulf and even up the eastern seaboard. On top of that, the tragic loss of life at the Upper Big Branch coal mine in West Virginia was the country’s worst mine disaster in four decades.

It’s time for America to choose cleaner energy—we must move away from outdated, dirty energy sources to smarter choices. New clean energy and energy efficiency technologies will create safe, green jobs, provide power without contaminating our land, water, and air, and will help curb global warming pollution.

Unfortunately, the Senate has yet to overcome the political impasse that is delaying action on this critical issue.

Please tell President Obama and Carol Browner, Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Policy, that we need their leadership to break this impasse and ensure that Congress passes comprehensive climate and energy legislation this year.
Time to Break through the Politics and Act on Climate

Reports have surfaced of United States support for a plan to reopen commercial whaling after more than twenty years.

The deal could come this month and would undermine decades of hard-won protections for whales and permit Japan, Norway and Iceland to openly kill whales with explosive harpoons for profit and trade.

Time is running out — please help protect these gentle giants from a return to such horrific cruelty. Take action and tell President Obama to reject plans to resume commercial whaling.

Ban New Offshore Drilling

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico.

Now, an oil spill on pace to be worse than Exxon Valdez is pumping at least 5,000 barrels of oil a day — that’s over 200,000 gallons — into the biologically diverse and commercially productive Gulf of Mexico.

Thousands of sea birds, dolphins, whales, sea turtles, and other animals are threatened by the ever growing plume of toxic sludge.

As the massive oil spill continues to grow, it exposes the dangers of offshore drilling. We need to send a message to President Obama and your senators to ban new offshore drilling and support clean energy alternatives.

Offshore drilling will NEVER be safe. Sign the petition to end new offshore drilling now.
