Enough is Enough!

Congress has once again failed to pass a bill to permanently fix Medicare’s payment formula. Enough is enough!

And since the TRICARE health care program that covers these military families is tied directly to Medicare, these cuts will also harm access to health care for them as well as for millions of America’s senior citizens.

The 23 percent Medicare physician payment cuts will impact the doctors who treat Medicare and TRICARE patients, many of whom will find that payments no longer cover the costs for the care they provide. Seniors and military families will pay the price, with fewer doctors and less access to the care they have earned.

Short-term actions are the wrong answer to this long-term problem. These Band-Aid fixes have only served to increase the size of the cuts and the cost of reform. The longer Congress delays, the higher the cost to the American taxpayer, and doctors and their patients are left in limbo.
Enough is Enough!

Step aside, Thailand, and make room for Brazil, the fastest growing hotbed for child sex tourism. Sex-hungry tourists are flocking to South America in droves for the promise of cheap, young, and easily accessible prostitutes. Not only that, but they have their choice of young kids (cheaper than the price of an older girl, according to one taxi driver), teens, and transvestites, and all for under $5. Quite the deal, eh?

Many young girls and boys in the country’s growing sex industry are forced to sell their services by by pimps, and sometimes even their parents. The BBC’s Chris Rogers headed to Brazil to investigate, and found many young kids selling sex because of their parents’ demands and families’ needs. He encountered one 13-year-old girl, Pia, who was forced into prostitution to support her mother’s (and her own) crack cocaine addiction, and two other young boys — dressed as girls — who used their earnings to buy food for their hungry and impoverished families. And their stories are not uncommon; many desperate kids, teens, and young women from Brazil’s favelas are left with no choice but to enter the prostitution industry, and others are forced into it with the typical promises of money, a better life, and happiness.

According to UNICEF, there are an estimated 250,000 child prostitutes in Brazil, and that number is growing. Sex tourists from all over the world, particularly the United States and Africa, head to that country for the promise of cheap, pleasurable sex in the countless “love motels” that can be purchased by the hour. Classy.

My hometown station, FOX Chicago, recently dared to question what is perhaps America’s most sacrosanct institution: the public library. Are libraries a waste of taxpayer money?, the station asked, managing to irritate people on both sides of the aisle.

You know they’re on a no-holds-barred offensive on big government when they go for your local library. When the internet is everywhere and paperbacks are cheap, who needs a library anymore?

FYI, FOX Chicago. Not everyone has home access to the internet. I know, it’s a surprise, given the hoards of people navigating downtown Chicago in Brooks Brothers suits with only their iPhones as company, but much of the city and the nation still doesn’t have internet access.

Among Chicagoans, 40 percent of people don’t have regular access to the internet. Of those, 25 percent have no access at all. In a time where people’s wallets are getting thinner, the internet can be one of the first things to go.

Take a look at this riveting investigative journalism:

The snowy plover is one of the most at-risk species from the BP oil spill. In addition to coming in direct contact to the oil, the snowy plover is at risk of being poisoned by eating smaller invertebrates that have been tainted with oil.

Rather than assuming full responsibility for the costs of their recklessness on wildlife like the snowy plover, the price tag could be pushed off on you, the American taxpayer.

Currently, outdated legislation puts BP off the hook for damages above $75 million, even though this is less than one day’s profit for BP!

Urge Congress to hold Big Oil polluters accountable to paying the full cost of their negligence.
